CHRISTIAN by CHRISTOPHER LANGE
Meeting and photographing Christian went a little differently than most of the portraits from the Meatpacking District series I’ve been working on for the past 14 months.
I was framing up a shot when he came over, and began directing the man I was photographing to pose a certain way for the picture. Normally, I would look at the person attempting to be a backseat photographer and promptly tell them to go do something rather unpleasant. There was, however, a glint in Christian’s eye, and the guy in front of the lens was reacting positively.
I let it slide.
I shot the photograph I wanted, and then spoke with Christian for a few minutes. He’s a really interesting character, and not at all the type that I would generally associate with the area. Really spiritual, and really into breathing correctly. He talked at great length about the importance of breathing through one’s nose, rather than the mouth.
I shot a pair of frames, with this one being by far the best one, and joined him at his table inside for a drink. It turns out that his friend, Alexandra, is half-Finnish, and she and I spent a few minutes conversing and blithering on in another language before I finished my drink, and resumed my work outside.
